About this concert
To open Wigmore Hall’s 110th anniversary season we have a very special event. Hailed by Musical America in 2005 as ‘the most electrifying singing actress of our day’, Finnish soprano Karita Mattila traces almost a century of Austro-German song, and includes selections by Sibelius and by Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947), the composer she regards as ‘Finland’s hidden jewel’.

In one of the most passionate love stories ever told, Tristan and Isolde’s lives are set on a path to tragedy by the swapping of a bottle of poison for a love potion. Yet this tragedy also results in their all-encompassing love for each other, and the intensity of their passion is expressed through Wagner’s sumptuous chromaticism and lush orchestral colours. The opera is one of the peaks of the operatic repertory, and the climax of Isolde’s ‘Liebestod’ is one of the most moving and all-encompassing musical moments ever written. This concert performance, directed by Peter Sellars, will be set against the stunning backdrop of Bill Viola’s film projections, further exploring the emotional subtexts of the work.

The performance will run for five hours and include two intervals.
